17th March 2014 – Garden tick…

Can’t say as this species was on my radar to be honest, so it was a bit of a surprise. I was dibbling about in the garden at lunchtime today when I heard the unmistakeable sound of some Twite. I immediately stopped what I was doing and looked around to see about 40 birds noisily and purposefully flying right over the garden. Marvellous! This cheered me up no end actually because I’d been feeling pretty glum after yet another fruitless trip around the patch (except for my first singing Chiffchaff of the year).

Luckily our garden is a good place to enjoy the birds anyway, and the sun was actually out for once earlier today. Right on cue a handful of Siskins have been using the feeders over the last couple of weeks…

….although it’s always a bit of a fight getting a turn at our feeding station…

Things are already looking promising for our Tree Sparrows, with the nestboxes in the garden already getting plenty of attention – fingers crossed for yet more breeding success this year…
