30th October 2012 – Great White Egret

With all the other good birds in the area recently I must admit I have rather overlooked our Great White Egret. It’s pretty much guaranteed at the moment in the vicinity of the saltmarsh pool at Campfield or from the hide at North Plain, although sometimes it can be more distant as it strolls around on the marsh or estuary, however it does regularly drop onto the pool to preen and feed where better views can be obtained. Cumbria had it’s first record of Great White Egret as recently as 2003 – a bird on Bassenthwaite Lake, but they have occurred in every year since 2006. Hopefully the Solway bird will overwinter like last year – fingers crossed.
