12th September 2011 – Stormy Stormie on the Solway

Today saw the remnants of Hurricane Katia battering the Solway with gale force south-westerlies and coastal flooding over the high tide. After my shift finished at 1335hrs (yes I was up at 0340hrs!!), I decided to go to the shelter at Bowness to see if anything decent was moving through, but getting there was less than straightforward because the marsh road was flooded. Over a two hour period the best bird was without doubt a Storm Petrel (definately a Stormie and not a Leach’s). This was only my 3rd on the Solway and my first since 2005. It lingered mid-channel for about 12 minutes giving prolonged, but relatively distant views, unfortunately beyond the range of my camera. Other birds seen were a few Bonxies and Arctic Skuas, a handful of Gannets and quite a few Kittiwakes.
