5th June 2011 – Wood Sand at Thacka

What a difference 48hrs can make, from the 25 degrees we had on Friday, today north Cumbria was shivering in the rain at a whopping 10 degrees. A Wood Sandpiper was reported this morning at Thacka Beck NR on the outskirts of Penrith, and having only ever seen two before in Cumbria I decided on a short trip down the motorway. It’s  a new reserve that I’d not visited before and it looks superb. Perfect for waders like, well, Wood Sand, and Lapwings have bred there too. I could easily imagine a Lesser Yellowlegs strolling around there no problem. The only downside was some hooligan kids who seemed intent on chasing everything in sight, and this eventually saw the disappearance of the Wood Sand. Thankfully I managed to get some pics before they arrived…
