21st September 2010 – After work Sharp-tailed…

Despite a 4am alarm, followed by a full shift at work, the lure of a new British bird – a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper in nearby Cleveland, was just too tempting. So late in the afternoon I left Carlisle and headed east, I knew I’d be pushing it for time but thankfully after a hasty dash from the car the bird had behaved itself and was showing as soon as we arrived. It was favouring the far shore of the pool south-east of Greatham Creek bridge and showed there until we left. It was very overcast and gloomy and the bird was fairly distant, so unfortunately photography was virtually impossible, but with shutter speeds of 1/30th second I just about managed my worst ever digiscoped record shot of a mega!
