19th September 2010 – Black Tern patch tick!

Whilst moping about the house this morning a skein of Pinkfeet flew over, my first ones of the autumn, but thankfully the rain finally cleared at lunchtime which allowed me to get out to Port Carlisle for the falling tide. The wintry theme continued with lots of Wigeon new in, but without doubt the highlight was a superb juvenile Black Tern flying around the harbour. Occasionally coming very close whilst the tide was still fairly high, it became more mobile and distant as the tide receded. A great new bird for me on the patch – thanks to Tristan Reid and Chris Hind for the call. Also here was a Curlew Sandpiper and three Little Egrets.

Another great set of photos. I especially like the one with the tern dipping into the water. Well done.
