5th September 2010 – Never seen anything on there before…

After seeing only five Curlew Sands this evening at Port I was driving home along the marsh road, and as I sped past the small marshy pool near Dykesfield I caught glimpse of a long-billed wader! Now I’ve driven past this pool thousands of times before and never seen anything on it so it was a bit of a shock. I kind of guessed it would be a godwit rather than the hoped for dowitcher and after a quick 3-point turn I was soon watching a particularly confiding, and hungry, Black-tailed Godwit. With a little fieldcraft and patience I managed some nice shots, despite the gales and overcast conditions.
